Protect your Home and Family with the Best Home Alarm Systems

How important is the safety of your home to you? How important is the safety of your family? Do you value your possessions and lifestyle? Most likely, all of these things are very important to you and you would be devastated to have a robbery or anything stolen from her home. You want your family to be safe and you want your home to be safe. That is why you need to take the safety precautions to protect them.

By choosing home alarm systems that protect you and your family, you can have greater peace of mind. You will feel much safer from intruders who may burglarize you or harm you and your family. There is no reason why you need to go through any of these situations more than once or even just one time. Home alarm systems will keep you safe and protect you and your family.

Just as with any purchase, you need to shop around for the best home alarm system. The priority should not be the cheapest price because you will sacrifice protection. Research is very important to find the best home alarm systems. You must go in knowing what qualities you are looking for and what type of alarm system you want to buy that will protect you and your family.

First, make sure the company is UL or ULC approved. If they are approved by the Underwriter’s Laboratory, you can be sure that they have passed extremely rigorous standards. A UL approved system offers added security. You know that if they approve the system, it has to be good. Also, error and omissions insurance is important as well. Insurance will cover you in bad situations, and insurance from a home alarm systems company for errors and omissions allows you to be sure that you are covered.

The company itself must pass standards as well. A locally owned and operated company will benefit you. Not only will you be able to contact them personally, but they will have your individual needs in mind and work for your approval. In order to keep your business running smoothly in your community, they must have happy customers. A full-service company is also very important. This means that they are in charge of selling you the system, installing it, servicing it, and monitoring the whole process. They will keep you safe because they are in charge of everything.

If you can get 24-hour service, that would be ideal. Hopefully there’ll never be a problem with your system, but in the case that there is, you want to be taken care of immediately. If they are only open 40 hours a week, there is limited availability time for them to fix your system. Make sure they can help you whenever necessary so that your system is working all the time.

Just as all these individual points are very important so is the reputation of the company. If the company has a bad reputation, they will not serve you to your standards. Ask friends and family if they have a system that they recommend. Look for reviews and testimonials from the company as well. Do your research to make sure they’re the best home alarm systems company for you. Keep your family and home safe.

Outdoor Security Camera Solutions For Low Light Conditions

Posted by Steve Goldman | Home Security | Monday 28 September 2009 7:33 am
by Steve Goldman

When it comes to optimizing the effectiveness of an outdoor security camera the most important thing is capturing useful video images. The first obstacle that most outdoor conditions poise is night surveillance since outdoor environments are little more difficult to control than indoor environments. At night it may be a challenge to provide enough light for the camera’s image sensors to pick up anything. That is when the alternatives must be considered.

While it is not always an option, installing additional lighting to the area is one way we can make sure the outdoor security camera captures usable video footage. A simple system like a light that is controlled by a person is not always viable when there may not be a person to do the job. There are also motion activated lights as well as motion activated cameras that begins recording only when there is some movement detected. The important part is that the light is sufficient in illuminating the security camera’s entire field of view.

When additional lighting is not an option or not the ideal solution and it is low light conditions a black and white camera may suffice. This is only effective up to a point and some amount of lighting is still required for the camera to produce quality images. Black and white cameras work because they have lower light requirements than colored cameras.

Night vision security cameras come in varying degrees of effectiveness measured by the LUX rating of the camera. The LUX rating lets us know the minimum light levels required for the security camera to work. The infrared technology records light at a frequency beyond what is visible to our eyes and produces the image in shades of green. The LUX rating is only useful when comparing between similar manufacturers because it is relative to their standards. By itself it doesn’t tell us much except that a LUX rating of 0 means the camera can produce an image in complete darkness.

Although most people are inherently good by nature, there are always discrepancies to that rule and that is why we need things like an outdoor security camera, or two or three, to protect ourselves and validate our accusations against any offenders. Sometimes just lighting an area will be enough to deter criminals, other times they will stop at nothing and the security camera is important for proper recourse.

The best way to protect an outdoor security camera is by using common sense and taking as many threats into consideration before installing the camera. This way you can look for the optimal installation position and strategy to minimize the chances of damage to your camera. Don’t forget all the supporting accessories in your security surveillance system such as the cables that connect the hardware. They need to be protected just like the rest of the system.

Burglar Alarms

Posted by Christopher Williams | Home Security | Sunday 27 September 2009 8:17 am
by Christopher Williams

The first electro-mechanical burglar alarm was invented in 1852 by an American. Edward Holmes’ creation was very simple, but well-received by the public. A gong was struck by a solenoid when a trip wire was disturbed. The wire could be wound around windows and door frames. Prior to this invention, the family dog was typically the best form of alarm. It wasn’t until the next century that the burglar alarm saw any advancement.

There are three main components to the basic burglar alarm system: the detection device, the main control unit, and the siren or sounder. The detection device, depending on what it’s set for, can monitor motion, heat, noise, shock, vibration, and smoke (if the unit is also used for smoke detection). When the device is triggered it sends the message to the main control unit, or the brain. The data is quickly analyzed and it is then determined whether or not to sound the alarm.

One type of burglar alarm that doesn’t require a professional to install is a wireless burglar alarm. There is a radio transmitter/receiver in each component of the wireless system. This allows the system to communicate with itself via radio waves. This is an easy set-up for the homeowner as no wires are needed, the parts can be placed virtually anywhere, and it is easy to make additions later and maneuver around, if needed.

A monitored home security system allows the home to be protected 24 hours a day by an alarm company. When a detection device is triggered the alarm is set off and the information is sent to the alarm company monitoring the system. This gives the homeowner peace of mind when they are not at home. There is also minimal maintenance to the homeowner, as the agency hired to install and monitor your home will also ensure that the system is always operable.

Magnetic switches can be used on doors and windows as a burglar alarm. They are very easy to install and maintain. In the simplest terms, there is a magnet and a switch that are lined up on the door or window. When the connection is broken between the two, i.e. the door is opened, then the alarm goes off. The draw-back to this is when the window or door is then closed, the alarm will usually stop.

There are different reasons to have a burglar alarm, and they are no longer just for the wealthy and business owners. They are still used to protect valuables, but are also widely used to protect the family as well. Not all intruders are after monetary riches. The cost of home security systems has decreased, making them very affordable.

Choosing the right burglar alarm is important. Things to consider are: how much money you have available to invest in a system, can you install it yourself, or do you need a professional to do the installation, and why you need the system. All these considerations play a key role in choosing the right alarm system. The most important thing is to do your research before you decide so you will be completely satisfied with your choice.

Swimming Pool Safety For Children

Posted by Owen Jones | Home Security | Saturday 26 September 2009 8:55 am
by Marion Rose Jones

Owning a swimming pool in your house or garden is a fantastic way to have fun for yourself and indeed your entire family. However, in spite of that, it can also be very dangerous to your children about. If you can, you should wait until your children are at least five years old or more until you put a swimming pool on your property. On the other hand, if you already have a swimming pool, there are ways that you can protect your children.

One thing you should always remember is to never, ever, allow your children to be alone near your pool. Children tend to be drawn to water and all it takes is a slip for them to fall into the swimming pool. If you and your children are at your pool side and you have to leave the area for a second, you must always take your children with you.

To be on the safe side, you should always ensure that you have plenty of safety equipment around your pool at all times. Safety items are essential to have around, as they could save the life of a child or anyone else who can’t swim.

You ought to buy a shepherd’s hook as well, as you can employ it to drag someone out of the pool. Having a telephone at your poolside is also a wise investment, since you can easily ring for assistance in case of an emergency.

If you don’t already have a fence around your pool you should think about getting one right away. A fence is a great way to keep children away from your swimming pool. If you have a protective fence up, you don’t have to worry about small children falling into it, while you are away from the pool. When you put your fence up, you should always make sure that it’s at least six feet high with a locking gate. In this way, no one can get into the pool without a key, which you should keep with you at all times.

You could learn artificial respiration too. Even though you hopefully will not ever have to use it. It is always great to know CPR in the event of someone falling in your pool that is unable to swim. Whenever you have people you know can’t swim at your pool, you should always stay near them, so you can react instantly if they fall in. A minute can be all it takes to save someone’s life.

Always bear in mind that a swimming pool is for having fun in, although you should always think in terms of safety first too. Once you have finished enjoying your pool for the day, ensure that you secure the poolside well – and padlock the gate tight so no one can get in too.

CCW Training Plus Firearms Equal Safety

Posted by Amber Shipplen | Home Security | Monday 21 September 2009 9:53 am
by Amber Shipplen

In Ohio, CCW classes are offered by a number of companies. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced shooter, there is a class for you. These Ohio CCW classes usually seek to help its students to improve their proficiency in shooting. These Ohio CCW classes also teach the correct outlook and attitude essential for the secure and efficient use of firearms.

Usually divided into two major components, these Ohio CCW classes usually comprise a 12-hour course. One of these components is the classroom component and the other one is the range component. Complementary in nature, these two go together. And you must complete the requirements of these two components, especially if you are applying for a concealed carry license, and must attain a certain level of being proficient to be able to get a passing grade. Like the ones offered by Aim Hi, there are courses that surpass the requisites mandated by Ohio CCW delegation and do not only focus on the most basic aspects of gun ownership and gun use.

Students are taught the rules and procedures in the safe handling of firearms in the classroom component of these Ohio CCW classes. The components of handguns and their respective functions are also part of this component. The students are also taught the basic know-how regarding ammunition and the malfunctions that may occur. And apart from the fundamentals of shooting, the correct way of storing and cleaning firearms are also discussed.

The various concealment options are also taught in the classroom component of these Ohio CCW classes. It is important for one to be aware of the many ways of concealing one’s firearm as nobody is allowed to brandish it in public. With this, also imparted to students are tips on how to safely bring it out of concealment, when need arises, and on the defensive use of firearms.

On top of these technical and mechanical matters, these Ohio CCW classes also enlighten the students on the legal considerations in CCW and in being a gun owner. Since having a gun and being licensed to conceal carry it is replete with responsibility, gun owners must be made to understand these responsibilities and their possible liabilities.

In the range component of these Ohio CCW classes, safe handling and operation of firearms is taught. Exercises in marksmanship are also part of this component. These exercises may include shooting accurately from a self-defense distance, shooting with the use of laser, and shooting in low or dim lights.

Also part of the range component is letting students practice with different types of firearms. And since the range component of these Ohio CCW classes is usually the practical part, whatever learned in the lectures and discussions in the classroom component are put into practice here.

The fee you pay for these Ohio CCW classes already include most of the things you will need and use in the course. All you need to do is attend your Ohio CCW classes and learn everything you can so that you will able to protect yourself and others.

Should You Carry Stun Guns and Pepper Spray?

Posted by Mike Ward | Home Security | Monday 21 September 2009 8:26 am
by Mike Ward

Many people erroneously believe that stun guns are dangerous. However if you should find yourself in a situation that calls for self-defense they are nice to have around. Stun guns work by passing a high voltage pulse through a person’s nervous system and muscles. The voltage is high enough to pass through clothing and skin and disrupt the normal nervous system functions but not intense enough to do serious damage.

What this does is it causes the muscles to function very rapidly but also not very efficiently, giving you time to get help or get away. Your attacker will find it difficult to move and will have to be still for some time in order to recover.

Pepper spray can be quite effective mode of self-defense as well. It is a bit more difficult as you need to be able to reach the spray and direct it to the attackers face. However if you have a clear shot to the face this is an excellent tool.

When sprayed in the face pepper spray will probably cause your attacker to stop moving in your direction and sit down. The spray causes intense burning in the eyes, so much so that they feel like they could pop, and if the attacker breathes in any of the spray breathing will become labored for a few minutes. This again leaves you time to run and call for help.

When you are looking for stun guns, know that there are many different ones available for you to choose from. There is the Muscle Man Stun Gun which carries 100,000 to 600,000 volts, the Panther Stun Gun that carries 100,000 to 500,000 volts, and perfect for a lady to carry in her handbag or even her pocket is the Streetwise Small Fry Stun Gun which carries 400,000 to 1,000,000 volts.

There is also the Blast Knuckles Stun Gun that you hold in your grip (pulling a fist) when you want to stun someone. This carries 950, 000 volts. There is the Double Trouble Stun Gun if you really want to give someone a kick, with 1.2 millions volts.

You have several options when it comes to pepper spray as well. You can purchase pepper spray in devices ranging from handy pocket pepper spray devices to full force police magnum style and everything you can imagine in between! Jogger Pepper spray, Home unit pepper spray and even hard key ring pepper sprays are all available at many retailers. No matter who you are, there is a pepper spray for almost every situation.

It is important for you to carry some form of protection with you wherever you go. Whether you prefer to have pepper spray or one of the many stun guns that are available, it doesn’t matter. You can even have both if you want. Don’t be caught off guard. Show them that they cannot mess with you! You have a right to protect yourself, so you should do what you can to make sure that you are safe when in public or at home and even when you are at work.

Looking At Home Security And Safety

Posted by April Kerr | Home Security | Friday 4 September 2009 8:20 am

When you need to protect your family and your home from intruders there are a number of home security options you can look at. There will always be a need for home security which is quite sad, however true. You will not wish to take any chances these days with the crime increasing the way it has been over the years.

There are many different types of home security, and there are many different types of personal security. In the following text we will explore a bit of both worlds so that you can go out and make informed decisions. When it comes to home security, most people tend to think about an alarm system. Now, yes, this is the main type of home security that you can get, and you will definitely want to get your one of these, but there are a ton of them on the market, which one do you get?

As is obvious, some are more expensive than others, so you may want to take a close look at your budget before you go any further. When you go out to look at alarm system, you will find that there are digital alarms and there are analogue alarms and there are wireless alarms.

Most of the time, you will discover, if there is an alarm there is an armed response or some type of response team connected to it. This means that if someone or something was to enter your premises and set off the alarm in the process, they would be met by a few very angry security men and women.

Now, when it comes to alarms you have a few decisions that you will want to make, and that is analogue, or digital or wireless.

The best package to get is one where you have all the windows and doors covered. This means that when you are inside with the alarm on, anything that comes in from outside will set it off and anyone opening a door or window will also trigger it. You should additionally get the room sensors. These will trigger when someone is inside your home in a certain room and they move. When you are at home these are normally disabled so that you can also walk around without setting the alarm off.

Which alarm system you go for depends on your resources. This is why you want to know that the analogue is the cheapest kind of alarm system, as it still works with radio waves, which means that you will have to have an aerial on your roof, which will just give it all away.

April Kerr writes for Finer Living which has information on low price driveway alarm systems and affordable motion security lights.

Live Safer With a Wireless Burglar Alarm

Posted by Todd Cavanaugh | Home Security | Thursday 3 September 2009 10:06 am

Let’s face it, any time is the right time to install a wireless burglar alarm. Somewhere in the U.S. there is a burglary every twelve seconds. If you have any doubt about your safety and security, now is the time to act. You can protect yourself and your property.

Perhaps more alarming than the fact that there are more than 750 burglaries for every 100,000 people in the U.S. is the fact that these brazen criminals are breaking into people’s homes in the daytime while the residents are at home. Sixty-two percent of burglaries happen during daytime hours and a startling sixty percent occur while people are at home.

Wireless Burglar Alarms Are a Good Choice

The fact that wireless burglar alarms are a good choice for any residence is supported by several facts. First, alarms are a deterrent. Homes that have no security are three times more likely to be targeted.

Second, wireless burglar alarms actually make sense for renters. Whether you are renting a house or an apartment, wireless burglar alarms are perfect. There is no need to damage walls, floors, ceilings, etc. to run new wires. And a portable wireless alarm can be easily removed and taken with you if you move.

The third advantage of a wireless burglar alarm is that they are quick and easy to install. You can probably handle the installation yourself in about an hour’s time.

How Many Parts Are There in Wireless Burglar Alarms?

You can pick and choose the components you need for your wireless burglar alarm, just as you would with a hard-wired system. You can get an alarm for a single door or a system for an entire house.

Every system will have a control panel, often combined with a keypad, a siren or alarm, a panic button, a connection to a telephone line, and switches or magnetic sensors for each exterior door and window. More elaborate systems might also include glass-break sensors that respond to the sound of a door or window being broken, motion sensors that detect someone moving around inside the house, exterior motion sensors that either turn on lights of sound an alarm if someone is close to exterior doors and windows.

What Kind of Wireless Burglar Alarm Do You Need?

The safest and most reliable way to assess your needs in a wireless burglar alarm is to consult with a home security professional. These trained professionals will help you evaluate your property, your neighborhood, and your home to determine if and how your might be vulnerable to burglary. They will look for such things as convenient dark places to hide outside your home, darkness around doors and windows, inadequate locks on doors and windows, and they will assess the safety provided by the types of doors and windows you have.

The next step is to look for the right wireless burglar alarm for your needs. Consulting with a security professional on this decision is also a good idea. Together you can decide whether you just need something at the door that will make a lot of noise or if you need a whole-house system that is monitored twenty-four hours a day. You can decide who should be notified if there is a break-in and ensure that the system you choose can meet your needs.

If you decide you only need a single wireless burglar alarm on your apartment door, you might just ask the alarm dealer to advise you on the best alarm. If the instructions with the alarm are clear, you can then install it yourself.

Whatever your needs, there is a wireless burglar alarm that is right for you. By carefully assessing your needs, shopping for the right alarm, and installing properly, you can live safer with a wireless burglar alarm.

Why Don’t You Have An Intruder Alarm?

Posted by Todd Cavanaugh | Home Security | Monday 31 August 2009 9:08 am

In a bad economy, when millions of people are out of work, crime rates increase dramatically. Crimes of opportunity increase the most. Robberies and home invasions are increasing, as testified every evening in the news. Protecting yourself from robbery and home invasion is why you need an intruder alarm.

Intruder alarms are becoming as important as a good lock and a deadbolt on the front door of a home. Whether you live in an apartment, a condo, a duplex or a single family residence, you could be vulnerable to robbery or home invasion. There are some simple ways to know if you would be smart to have an intruder alarm. If you find that you should have intruder alarms, you can purchase and install quickly, sometimes in just one day. You can easily find the intruder alarm that is right for you.

Who Needs an Intruder Alarm?

If you have any concern about someone breaking into your home, you should have an intruder alarm. If you are a member of certain groups who are considered especially at risk, you should have an intruder alarm. Who are the groups? Those considered targets by criminals are: the elderly, the disabled, children home alone, women living alone, people who travel frequently and leave the house empty. It doesn’t matter if you consider yourself vulnerable; it matters if criminals think you are vulnerable. If you fit one of these groups, you need an intruder alarm.

Any home can be a target for any of a number of reasons. Unless you live in an unusually safe area, you will probably sleep better and your family will probably feel safer with an intruder alarm. The first step in protecting your family and your home is to understand how vulnerable you are. By consulting with a home security professional, you can get a very accurate assessment of your need for intruder alarms.

Consider Your Vulnerability

It is important to know how vulnerable you and your family are before investing in an intruder alarm. Here are some of the things to consider:

– You never lock your doors; you don’t lock doors in the day time

– Are your windows unlocked?

– There are wooded areas around your home or other good places to hide

– Are your doors and windows lighted at night?

– Do you often come home with packages, computers, etc. in your hands?

– You park in a carport, a driveway or a detached garage

– Are there trees or shrubs near doors that are good places to hide?

– Would anybody be able to hear you if you called for help?

– You have a lot of exterior patio doors and French doors

– Someone could easily follow you or one of your children home

– Do you keep large amounts of cash in your home?

– You routinely carry a lot of cash

Intruder Alarms Fit Every Need

There are several types of intruder alarms for you to consider. Some are more appropriate for particular types of residences.

If you live in a unit (apartment or condo) in a large building, you probably need to focus on an intruder alarm for the main door. If you live on one of the first two or three floors, you might also need to think about a patio or balcony door and windows. You might want to look for a portable or an electronic intruder alarm. These are easy to install and can be taken with you from one place to another or just left behind. Your main need from the intruder alarm is lots of noise, enough to rouse your neighbors or the security guards.

Living in a duplex or a single family home has different intruder alarm requirements. You will probably want to look into an intruder alarm system that integrates several kinds of alarms. First, you will want intruder alarms on doors that will sound when the door is opened. Second, you will want intruder alarms on windows which sound when the window is opened. The third type of intruder alarm you will want is glass-break alarms. These devices respond to the sound of a window or door glass being broken. These intruder alarms are especially important if you have windows that are difficult to alarm or several largely glass doors. Fourth, you might want to add a motion detecting intruder alarm that will alert you if someone is moving around in the house.

In addition to the sound of the intruder alarms and the sirens they activate if someone enters your home, intruder alarms can also be monitored by security companies. In this case, if an intruder alarm is activated, the security company or monitoring company calls your local police department. In many cities, you can also connect your intruder alarm system directly to the police department.

Whether you think you are especially vulnerable to a break-in or not, intruder alarms are increasingly popular and advisable in residences. You’ll probably sleep better and your family will feel safer at home with good intruder alarms.

Todd Cavanaugh owns Protech Security Systems. He has been installing intruder alarm systems for the last decade. Protech installs pre-wired and wireless monitored security systems, 24-hour surveillance cameras, access control systems and smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Protech is among the intruder alarm Tucson companies recognized by the BBB as an Accredited Member.
