Don’t Spend Hours On Gardens Maintenance

Gardens maintenance can quickly become a tiresome and frustrating task if you are doing it wrong. Your garden will tell you what needs to be done as the seasons change.

Autumn leaves falling create a beautiful carpet of color and should rather be enjoyed than raked every day. Let the tree finish the drop of leaves before you take action. Instead of working leaves into bags for disposal, simply rake them into your flower beds where they will form a blanket of protection against the frosty winter conditions that will soon threaten to kill your plants.

Roses can be pruned very precisely wasting hours of time. A quick and very efficient way of doing this job is to use a simple measure stick of 90 centimeters long. Simply push it down into the rose bed to a depth of approximately ten centimeters and cut your roses at the top level of the stick. From the cut off bushes you can now quickly make cuttings if you wish, or simply shred and scatter the cuttings over the rose beds. This layer will protect the roses from frost killing their roots.

Many a husband can’t stand the site of the lawn mower, but will face it at least twice a week. Buy him a calendar for gardeners that shows the phases of the moon and when to mow a lawn to reduce growth. By doing this task on time, you can reduce your waltz with the mower twice times a month.

Forget about setting aside whole days just for garden maintenance, rather do it as you spot something the needs to be done. On your afternoons stroll through the garden, nip out dead flowers or pull up some weeds. By doing something small every day, your maintenance will not build up into time consuming projects.

A small amount of maintenance will see you enjoy a beautiful garden all year long.

Using A Single Bed For Your Child’s Bedroom

Posted by Greeta Shillingsford | Interior Design | Monday 5 October 2009 8:52 am
by Greeta Shillingsford

If you want to create a perfect place for your little angel to sleep, you will have to make the transformation from cot into single bed. For a toddler a change like this can be quite dramatic, so take it easy. Here is how to introduce a single bed into a toddler’s world.

There comes a time when we as parents have to realize that our children grow up, and they it will be a bit weird to have a ten year old child still sleeping in his or her cot. We all want to them stay and innocent as they were when they were tiny, but everyone grows up, and when they do, they will need a single bed in their room. Okay, so they are not all that big yet, so you still want to make sure that they are safe, putting the bed up against the wall on one side is a start, and getting a guard rail (plastic) for the other side will finish off the job.

Okay, so the transition from cot to bed might be a bit weird and a bit much for one small little toddler to take in. It is natural, he or she is going from a tiny cot to a big bed, and this may make them feel insecure. Remedy this with tons of pillows and a whole lot of stuffed animals. Sleeping among them will make your young one feel better.

You can also use your cot mattress to start off with on top of the bed. This gives them a sense of something familiar and makes it easier for them to understand. They know that this new bed is not totally different and scary. With most toddlers the transition is quite easy into a new bed. You should also keep using the same pillows, bedding, and blankets to start off with.

Once your child is used to sleeping in this new bed, you can get let them sleep under the single bed duvet or comforter. You can get a brand new one as a present with fun picture and images that they love. They will really enjoy sleeping in this new bed.

Making it a fun room you can also get single beds shaped like cars or princess carriages. These will be lots of fun for kids and they will probably love sleeping in their new bed. You can find all sorts of unique children’s beds.

If you can’t find the exact one you want, or it is too expensive you can always create a similar effect using a headboard and foot board. You can make this yourself out of MDF or just plain cardboard covered in fabric or painted. You can make your child’s favorite images, shapes and colors.

From Home to Home: Relo Advice If Your On The Move

Posted by Steve Scheckner | Gardening | Sunday 4 October 2009 10:49 am
by Steve Scheckner

Getting ready to relocate? Everyone has there specific circumstances when it’s time to move. You may have a big house, a lot of pets, or a collection of pottery to consider. The best thing to do is think ahead and follow some easy steps to make your move stress free.

Two things to consider is whether you will employ a moving company or take on the move yourself. Finding a reputable moving company involves a decent amount of research. You don’t want your time, money and belongings getting into the wrong hands. The moving industry is known for having great scam artists that have no problem robbing you of your things and money. Don’t shop on the Internet where the scammers are waiting for you. Ask a friend or neighbor if they know of a good company they’ve had an enjoyable experience with. Instead of using the Internet to find a company use it as a resource to research how to avoid being scammed.

You may want to shop around in advance for the best rates and specials if you’ve decided to move on your own. There is a possibility you can save some money if you have your own packing supplies and moving equipment. A lot of the truck rental companies may have low rates for their trucks, but high rates for moving and packing supplies. It would be a good idea to have at least a hand truck or dolly, furniture blankets and rope or straps you can lock down. Look over the truck to make sure it is in good condition before making your move.

One of the best times to consolidate your belongings is during a move. You may find you have one vacuum cleaner too many or an extra Betamax machine. Contact a charity to arrange for a pick up or a drop off of these items. Make sure to file the receipts of the donations for tax time. The other fun family alternative is to have a garage sale.

Keep the list of addresses and phone numbers you will need for your move close by and not packed away. It is a good idea to get in touch with your utility companies to transfer or turn off services, your home insurance provider, and the post office to forward old mail at this time.

You will most likely spend your moving day at your old home. It is a good idea to be supervising the movers, so either yourself or a family member should be present until they’re loaded and have left. Review the bill of lading and ask all of your questions before you sign. Give them your best contact number so they can contact you in case of an emergency. Ask for their mobile numbers or a means of contacting them as well. And finally, close all of your windows, lock your doors and say goodbye to your old house.

Posted by Aleesha London | Pets | Wednesday 30 September 2009 7:51 am
by Aleesha London

Your dog may need aggressive dog behavior training classes. This is especially if your dog is already a threat to other animals and to humans. There are however, numerous modules and training programs vying for your attention. How do you know which programs you should trust?

Real Expertise

You have the option of choosing an instruction manual or a real trainer. In any case, the person behind a training program for dogs should be a real expert. He should have enough experience under his belt to make him a credible trainer or source of information about dog training. You don’t want to trust your dog to someone who has a fake trainer’s certification. You can try to find out how good an expert really is by asking about his credentials. You can also ask fellow dog owners if they know anything about the trainer you are considering.

Owner Involvement

Keep in mind that you are the one living with your dog, not your trainer. It is therefore quite crucial that a training program or module that you are considering has provisions for owner participation. This means a dog expert should also be willing to help you understand the reasons behind your dog’s behavior and the rationale behind the techniques you will be using to control your dog. After all, you don’t want to be a mindless automaton with no idea why you need to do or say certain things to make your dog obey.

Affordability

Aggressive dog behavior training classes may be necessary. Even so, you don’t want to go bankrupt paying for them. Whenever possible you would want to pay for an expertly made training program that will not cost you a fortune. Unfortunately, many training classes do cost a lot. You would have to be more patient and resourceful if you want to find one that will fit your budget perfectly. Consider looking through newspaper ads, yellow pages and online directories.

Effectiveness

Keep in mind that dog trainers and experts don’t always agree. One expert might tell you one thing while another might tell you otherwise. Which one should you consider following? The most effective technique always has an edge. The question is: how do you know which techniques are effective? This is where you might have to do a little more research. There are bound to be some dog owners out there who will swear by a good program or module for dog training. Search in online forums and review sites for owner recommendations.

Humane Techniques

As a dog owner, you’ll know which techniques are humane for your dog. You don’t need to be a dog expert to know when a technique isn’t good. Before you consider a training program or module, try to find out first the general guiding principle behind it. Believe it or not, some experts still incorporate physical harm in their training modules. You should know though that the use of too much hitting and electric shock might make your dog even more aggressive or emotionally scarred. Always opt for humane modules.

Aggressive dog behavior training are specifically designed to help a dog get rid of its aggressive tendencies and to build a better, stronger, and safer relationship with its owner. With the right training program or module, you will be able to finally have the loving dog of your dreams.

Information On Beautiful And Traditional Canopy Bedding

Posted by Jessica Stannon | Interior Design | Tuesday 29 September 2009 7:55 am
by Jessica Stannon

There is something incredibly romantic about a beautiful canopy bed complete with covered top and matching bedding. Canopy beds have really increased in popularity and many people are looking at them as ways to add a personal touch to their bedrooms or guest rooms. Canopy bedding is available in a range of colors and styles to suit a wide range of tastes.

Canopy bedding used to serve a very important role in homes throughout history. From humble homes to lofty manors, canopy bedding was used for two reasons: to keep the heat in when it was very cold and drafty, and to keep things from falling from roof thatching into the beds where people were sleeping. Many people will remember the scene from A Christmas Carol where Scrooge peers anxiously through his bed curtains to see who is speaking to him when visited by the ghosts trying to reform him.

Modern canopy beds often are made of wrought metal and offer a square canopy area and very straight lines. A more traditional wooden canopy bed may have a top which is arched and carved. This can affect the kind of bedding you purchase as it may be designed to fit a particular shape.

Your idea of what you want your bedding to look like may vary significantly from someone else who is also choosing canopy bedding. Do you want a clean look with minimal ornamentation? This style of bedding can work really well with a stark and simple metal frame. Do you like the look of lace curtains and heavy tie backs? Consider a more traditional bed with a more highly ornamented style of decoration.

Sources for canopy bedding can include online auctions, department stores and specialty bedding stores. If you are purchasing online it can be a good idea to have your bed’s measurements handy so that you know what size of canopy you require. Knowing whether you are working with straight metal poles or arched wooden supports is also good since some sets may not work with some canopy shapes.

You may want to consider having your canopy bedding custom made. This can make it fairly expensive in the long run. However, if the bedding is custom made you can ensure it will coordinate with other furnishings in your room or throughout your home. You can also make sure that the bedding will match your personal style when it comes to the amount and style of ornamentation. If you are someone who loves modern clean lines, you do not want to have a canopy bed that is covered in tiers of lace or ribbon.

You can also think about making a set yourself from a pattern. It is always preferable to have a pattern rather than a picture to work from. You can find patterns in fabric stores, online or in books of home furnishings.

Canopy bedding is something that can add a definite flavor to a room. If you like a historical look with a modern twist, think about canopy bedding as a wonderful option for your home.

Organic Dog Food

Posted by Frank Williams | Pets | Sunday 27 September 2009 7:59 am
by Frank Williams

The requirement of healthy food seems to apply equally to people and their pets, since many animal owners prefer to buy organic products to feed their four-legged friends. One could be forgiven for being surprised at the large variety of organic dog food available on the market. Just as for humans, there are many of pet health issues that one could cure or even prevent in the first place by the use of organic pet food.

For instance, organic dog food could reduce the risk of the dog developing skin diseases and allergies. The reason for the positive health impact is the absence of additives, chemicals, colourants and pesticides. Instead the ingredients of organic dog food are just grain extracts and high quality proteins. Organic dog food provides more nutrients, which is reflected in the higher levels of energy and the weight of the pet.

Normal dog food often causes diabetes and excess weight with all the concomitant problems that accompany these illnesses: back ailment, organ failure and decreased mobility. How can organic dog food help here? Well, organic food items for pets do not contain bulk fillers, they are nutrient-packed products that create energy not fat deposits. Moreover, it is best and a lot easier to prevent health issues than to try to treat them afterwards.

Good digestion and a stronger immunity system are the other main benefits that come with the feeding of organic dog food. Because of the lack of chemicals usually present in regular pet food, your dog will no longer be sick or experience wind or diarrhea. A healthier metabolism is what you will achieve with a healthy diet. Furthermore, the quality of the nutritional substances in organic dog food, boosts the immunity functions, thereby reducing the risks of infection and all sorts of specific diseases that affect dogs on a routine basis.

In general, veterinarian experts claim that organic dog food significantly increases the life of any animal, to say nothing of the fact that it will pass through old age a lot better. It is not uncommon that pet owners who choose organic dog food, are also interested in eating organic foods themselves, sticking to clean natural products that boost bodily functions and avoid toxins and disease.

Ask your local dog food provider about organic dog food and if there is none available at your local shop, try to order it online. There are plenty of web sites that sell such products at pretty good prices.

One last tip, be very wary of dried dog food, no matter what it says on the packet. I used to have a dog that stayed at home alone during the day, while I went to work. I didn’t like to leave ‘wet’ food, because of flies, bacteria and vermin, so I bought dry food, which would not deteriorate during the day. However, within six years she had diabetes, which meant that I had to inject her with insulin every morning. The veterinary said that it was very common for dogs fed only on biscuits to get diabetes, so check with your vet first or feed organic wet food.

Swimming Pool Safety For Children

Posted by Owen Jones | Home Security | Saturday 26 September 2009 8:55 am
by Marion Rose Jones

Owning a swimming pool in your house or garden is a fantastic way to have fun for yourself and indeed your entire family. However, in spite of that, it can also be very dangerous to your children about. If you can, you should wait until your children are at least five years old or more until you put a swimming pool on your property. On the other hand, if you already have a swimming pool, there are ways that you can protect your children.

One thing you should always remember is to never, ever, allow your children to be alone near your pool. Children tend to be drawn to water and all it takes is a slip for them to fall into the swimming pool. If you and your children are at your pool side and you have to leave the area for a second, you must always take your children with you.

To be on the safe side, you should always ensure that you have plenty of safety equipment around your pool at all times. Safety items are essential to have around, as they could save the life of a child or anyone else who can’t swim.

You ought to buy a shepherd’s hook as well, as you can employ it to drag someone out of the pool. Having a telephone at your poolside is also a wise investment, since you can easily ring for assistance in case of an emergency.

If you don’t already have a fence around your pool you should think about getting one right away. A fence is a great way to keep children away from your swimming pool. If you have a protective fence up, you don’t have to worry about small children falling into it, while you are away from the pool. When you put your fence up, you should always make sure that it’s at least six feet high with a locking gate. In this way, no one can get into the pool without a key, which you should keep with you at all times.

You could learn artificial respiration too. Even though you hopefully will not ever have to use it. It is always great to know CPR in the event of someone falling in your pool that is unable to swim. Whenever you have people you know can’t swim at your pool, you should always stay near them, so you can react instantly if they fall in. A minute can be all it takes to save someone’s life.

Always bear in mind that a swimming pool is for having fun in, although you should always think in terms of safety first too. Once you have finished enjoying your pool for the day, ensure that you secure the poolside well – and padlock the gate tight so no one can get in too.

Alternatives to Cat Declawing

Posted by Moses Wright | Pets | Saturday 26 September 2009 7:22 am
by Moses Wright

While declawing has a history of being accepted as part of cat ownership, many question whether cat declawing is a humane practice. Alternatives to cat declawing are now seen as ideal ways to prevent cat scratching.

During the surgery to declawed cat, the and digit of the cat’s toes are removed. The veterinarian may opt to to the claw instead of removing the end portion of the cat’s toes.

Cat declawing is done to prevent or stop destructive cat scratching of furniture, doorways, or other areas commonly targeted for cat scratching. Sometimes, declawing is used to stop the cat from scratching during play, however what often happens is the cat will start to bite since they can no longer use its claws as a defense.

Cat declawing can lead to complications such as changes in the cat walk which can lead to abnormal wear of the joints and skeletal problems. Declawing leaves the cat defenseless if the cat becomes a stray. Infection of the paw is another possible complication of cat declawing.

Declawing has been associated with litter box problems. After cat has been declawed, the cat often experiences a great deal of pain. A cat that is experiencing pain from declawing may have increased pain while digging in the litter box which can make the cat want to avoid the litter box.

The Humane Society and other organizations that promote the humane treatment of animals are opposed to cat declawing. There are several humane alternatives to cat declawing. A cat owner can simply trim the tips of the cat’s claws regularly.

The cat owner can expose the claws by gently pressing on the cat’s paw. Using a regular fingernail clippers, the cat owner can put off the tips of the nail being careful to avoid the pink area of the nail which is the quick. The quick will cause the nail to believe if the quick is cut.

Scratching post can be an effective alternative to cat declawing. If a cat refuses to use his scratching posts, the cat owner may encourage use by rubbing the scratching post with catnip and placing it near where any destructive scratching has occurred.

Vinyl claw covers are tiny plastic nail caps that glue onto a cat claws. Vinyl nail caps typically stay in place for about five weeks.
